    Turin
    Turin, the capital of Piedmont, lies in north-western Italy where the Dora Riparia flows into the Po, at the foot of the Western Alps. The city is home to around 883 thousand people, with 2.2 million across the wider metropolitan area. Known for its rich history, it dates back to Roman times, when the military camp of Augusta Taurinorum was established here. Turin is also an important centre of culture and industry, and the home of the famous Shroud of Turin. The feast of the city's patron saint, John the Baptist, is celebrated on 24 June.
