Funchal
Funchal, the capital of Madeira, is situated on the island's southern coast. It is an important commercial and fishing port, as well as a renowned climatic health resort. The city was founded in 1421 by João Gonçalves Zarco and was granted city rights in 1508. Funchal is famous for its wine industry.
