    Zagreb
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, has 767 thousand inhabitants, or around 1.1 million including the wider metropolitan area. It lies on the northern bank of the Sava at the foot of the Medvednica. Its historic centre grew out of the former settlements of Gradec and Kaptol. The city is the country's key administrative and cultural centre. The subtropical continental climate brings snow in winter and rain and fog in autumn. It is best visited in spring or summer, when temperatures are pleasant. Zagreb is also a meeting point for the cultures of Central Europe and the Balkans.
